Richard Flynn

The Artist
Richard Flynn has been working as an artist since graduating from the Newcastle College of Art in England in 1970, most recently as the artist in residence at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Ontario.  He painted the gritty industrial landscapes and rural Northumberland where he grew up, before immigrating to Cambridge Narrows, New Brunswick twenty years ago, after a long lost uncle left him a property.   He loves the warm hospitable nature of the Maritimes, and says he was seduced from Britain by the beauty of New Brunswick.

The Work
Flynn can often be seen capturing colourful scenes at the historic Saint John City Market, bustling with cruise ship visitors to the Bay of Fundy. His method combines several mediums and textures, often starting with watercolour, acrylic, and pastels. Whether he is working on the spot depicting the energy of city life, or capturing the quiet beauty of nature, Flynn is considered one of the region’s most prolific and talented artists.

The Place
Flynn founded the Acacia Gallery and Studio in the lower St. John River Valley in the hub of New Brunswick, between the cities of Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John. Cambridge Narrows is about an hour’s drive from Saint John, Canada’s first incorporated city. His 20-plus acres of idyllic farmland along the rolling countryside have inspired his pieces.  From the flowering crab trees next to river, to the water lilies on the pond, many of his works have developed from the perennials he’s planted in his gardens.
